A new Psych movie has hit a pineapple-sized speed bump. First, the good news: A sequel to last December’s super-fun Psych: The Movie is in the early stages of development at Universal Cable Productions and USA Network. Now for the bad: The project is on hold.

Although a rep for USA/UCP declined to comment, TVLine has learned that talks had been underway to potentially shoot a second movie later this year. But the pic was pushed due to scheduling conflicts with leads James Roday and Dule Hill (Roday stars in the new ABC drama A Million Little Things, while Hill is busy with USA’s Suits, where he was recently promoted to a series regular).

Franks is already banking on making at least a second movie, if only so there can be a full reunion, which this one sadly isn’t. Original cast-member Timothy Omundson, who plays Detective Carlton Lassiter, suffered a stroke about a month before production on Psych: The Movie began, which meant his role in the reunion had to be reduced because he was in rehab recovering. In the wake of this, the script was re-written, moving the story to San Francisco instead of Santa Barbara.

The second movie, if it is ever greenlit, will not only include a larger Lassiter presence but will also have several Santa Barbara-set scenes that were removed during the re-write process.

“There’s some great, great stuff that took place in Santa Barbara, and movie two is certainly going to utilize some of those bits. The entire scenes, word-for-word, will be in the second movie,” says Franks, who is confident that Omundson will be back in shape when the time comes. “The idea is that the second one would be the one that we would do to fully have everybody back together in the same room at the same time.”

Although this movie “didn’t feel complete” without Omundson, Roday says his “remarkable” recovery motivated the entire cast to work even harder.

“It’s like watching a great player go down on a sports team and the rest of the team sort of figures out a way to fill that hole, step up, and still win the championship,” says Roday. “He was certainly with us in spirit, and we all felt it, and because of that, we all wanted this to be 10 times better…I feel like his energy and his heart and his love for our show was sort of driving the entire experience. I would give him MVP status without even being there.”

Here are some bits about Tim and how he will be included in Psych: The Movie.

You’ve no doubt noticed that one important face is missing from that group shot: Timothy Omundson, who plays Detective Lassiter. Omundson is absent from the from the reunion because he suffered a stroke shortly before production began on the movie, which meant Franks and Roday, who co-wrote the script, had to rework the story.

“[Omundson’s stroke] kind of forced us to rethink a lot. First and foremost, whether or not we should be making this movie — if it even made sense and if the timing was right or not. Then beyond that creatively, how do we make that work?” says Roday, who characterizes Omundson’s recovery as “remarkable.”

After talking with Omundson and his family, they decided to forge ahead and actually found a way for their friend to be part of the experience in some capacity. “There is most definitely a way that he appears in the movie,” says Franks. “We haven’t gotten to that point [in the editing process, yet]. I can’t say for 100 percent sure that he will, but I can say like 99.99 percent that we did everything we can to get Tim in the movie.”

Roday adds: “I think we found the best way possible to keep Lassiter very much a part of what we do, set him up to succeed in the future, and still give all of our Psych-Os an opportunity to see that ridiculously handsome mug of his.”

Christmas is here early for Psych-os, fans of USA Network’s long-running, quick-witted mystery series Psych!

On Monday, USA announced plans with Universal Cable Productions (UCP) for Psych: The Movie, featuring fake psychic detective Shawn Spencer (James Roday) and his best friend, Burton “Gus” Guster (Dulé Hill). The team will reunite once again, returning to USA for the holidays, when the two-hour special premieres this December. Psych creator Steve Franks, who co-wrote the movie with Roday, is directing.

Lassiter (Timothy Omundson), Juliet (Maggie Lawson), Henry (Corbin Bernsen), and Chief Vick (Kirsten Nelson) will also return for the movie, which picks up three years after the series finale. The ambitious friends — along with some returning fan-favorite characters — come together during the holidays after a mystery assailant targets one of their own. A comedic thrill-ride follows, as the wild and unpredictable Psych team pursues the bad guys, justice … and, of course, food!
